HealthPartners is a US-based integrated healthcare organization, providing health care services and health plan financing and administration to more than 1.8 million members nationwide. Founded in 1957 as a cooperative, today it has grown to be the largest consumer-governed nonprofit health care organization in the nation. Since 1997, HealthPartners has leveraged its cooperative expertise to develop an innovative cooperative health insurance model for resource-poor locations. With funding from the Cooperative Development Program at USAID, HealthPartners provides resources for capacity building and network development to empower local stakeholders to access care and improve their health. HealthPartners does not reinsure providers or subsidize costs for cooperative members. The HealthPartners cooperative model is one hundred percent sustainable by local stakeholders who benefit through their cooperative partnerships.
